I had some problems using VISTA. I had to start the program as Administrator - just right click on the shortcut and choose open as administrator. I also used the Critical Rebuild here Neverwinter Nights: Original NWN (English) Patch - Windows
I don't think it messes with your saves, but I would save in a separate folder if it was me.
