If I remember correctly, they do overlap slightly. If you install the "slightly smarter mages", which is the biggest understatement ever, all mages gets a lot of spells and contingencies.

That means that Irenicus and Sendai will be a much bigger pain in the already challenging final battle of Ascension. It is definitely doable, I did that mistake the first time I played the game and ended up with a much tougher fight than supposed, but it's doable.

I wouldn't recommend that mod, though. It's one of the worst additions from Tactics, although not quite as bad as the slightly smarter dragons.
