Have you tried installing the fanpatch? You can find it on Terra Arcanum >> the World of Troika Games .
I saw you mentioned "loading the cd image" in another post. If you're playing an illegal version, this is what might be causing it. (And, *if* (big if) so, you deserve it.  )
