Another excellent freebee is Spyware Blaster, it doesn't scan but it prevents a lot of the crap from getting into your computer in the first place.
For free AV, I've had very good luck with Avast. I still recommend downloading the trial of Kaspersky first though, just to make sure your machine is properly cleaned up.
