Strength is the representation of a character's endurance, stamina, and, of course, muscle. This attribute is particularly of interest to any class participating
in a lot of melee combat due to its direct correlation to how often you hit and how much damage each hit inflicts. Let's take a look at the 3rd edition table for attributes:
Instead of breaking down the bonuses for your THAC0 and damage like 2nd edition, 3rd Edition instead gives you a base modifier, which is added or subtracted from the following:
- Attack rolls in melee range
- Damage rolls in melee range (or thrown weapons)
- Strength checks for bashing doors, etc
- Several skills with strength as their key ability
Damage rolls must be calculated, depending on the number and type of weapon(s) you are handling. For example, a weapon in your off-hand receives only half of the
modifier as a bonus to damage, whereas your primary weapon receives the full amount. Attacking with a two-handed weapon gets you a bonus of one and a half times this modifier.
How's that for an incentive to use a two-hander instead of dual wielding?
