Tired travelers on the Coastway between Baldur’s Gate and Amn often stop in Beregost. Beregost is located just off the road about a day’s travel south of where the Way of the Lion branches off from the Coastway. This town, while much smaller than Baldur’s Gate, boasts three inns, two stores, a magic shop, a temple, and a descent tavern. It’s within reach of the northern border of Amn. Merchants of that land often use it as a rendezvous for caravan assembly before attempting the perilous overland runs North to Waterdeep or East to the Sea of Fallen Stars.
Important characters:
- Taerom “Thunderhammer” Fuiruim (NG, Human Male, Fighter)
1- GOLIN VEND:
Offers you directions since you are new in town and that you look sympathetic. Tells you where Feldpost’s Inn (4), The Burning Wizard (7), The Red Sheaf Inn (9), The Jovial Juggler (15) are, as well as about Taerom “Thunderhammer” Smithy (14).
2- SHOP:
Kagain: Kagain (LE, Dwarf Male, Fighter) is a mercenary who has an escort caravan business. However, things have gone wrong in the past few months and the last caravan he was supposed to protect got robbed just North of Beregost. Even more importantly, Duke Entar’s son, who was traveling with the caravan, disappeared and needs to be found. So Kagain offers you the chance to go with him investigate the matter. Once you reach the Crossroads, however, he decides that there is no chance to find Duke Entar’s son, so he decides to come with you instead.
3- TOWN CRIER:
During the day you can meet the Town Crier around this spot. He tells you about a 5,000 gp. bounty that has been placed on the head of the evil cleric Bassilius. Bassilius can be found South of High Edge and his Holy Symbol can be brought to the Temple of Lathander, just East of Beregost, for the reward.
4- FELDPOST’S INN:
1st Floor:
Marl: A farmer who’s son became an adventurer and recently got killed. Marl is angry and starts picking on you since you are an adventurer yourself. There are 2 ways of dealing with him.
Good path: Try to reason Marl and to tell him that you cannot be held responsible for other people’s choices(choose answers: 1-1-3-3-1). Eventually Marl calms down and you get 900 Exp.
Evil path: Kill Marl. This will give you 650 Exp. and a bit of gold.
Other path: Reason Marl using the good path for 900 Exp. and then kill him to get the other 650 Exp.! You lose no reputation in the process.
Gyllian: A noblewoman who obviously had one too many. She talks a bit with you and then leaves.
Bartender:
Rooms: The 4 types of rooms are available.
Shop: A very good shop furnished with excellent items: Amulet of Protection +1, Arrows +2, Battle Axe +1, Composite Long Bow +1, Bracers of Defense A.C.8, Bullets +1, Chainmail +1, Medium Shield +1 and Bastard Sword +1.
Drinks: Yes.
Steal: No.
2nd Floor:
Algernon: A traveler who can be Pickpocketed for a cloak, Algernon’s Cloak, which gives the wearer a bonus of 2 in charisma.
Tranzig: Will be present in a room after you have cleaned the Naskhel mines. Kill him and the location of the Bandit’s Camp will be revealed on your map. He is worth 975 Exp. and has a Wand of Magic Missiles and a Ring of Protection +1 on him. What is good is that you can place your characters all around the room before you talk with him. An easy fight all in all (more of an execution than a fight!).
5- FIREBEAD ELVENHAIR’S HOUSE:
Firebead: Firebead (yes, the one from Candlekeep) will first offer his condolences for the death of Gorion. He will then ask you to get him a copy of “The History of the Fateful Coin”. This book can be bought at Feldpost’s Inn. Return it to Firebead for 300 Exp., +1 Reputation and another book in return.
6- GARRICK:
Garrick (CN, Human Male, Bard) offers you a job as bodyguards for his mistress, Silke Rosena. If you accept, he brings you to her, at the location (8).
7- THE BURNING WIZARD:
1st Floor:
Zhurlong: A kleptomaniac thief who asks you to return him the Boots of Stealth from a hobgoblin who stole them from him, just South of Beregost. He also Pickpockets you before you go for about 15 gp. When you return the boots to him, he gives you 100 gp., the gold he has stolen from you and you get 300 Exp.
Bartender:
Rooms: The 4 types of rooms are offered.
Shop: No.
Drinks: Yes.
Steal: No.
2nd Floor:
Spen Gil’hem: A peasant who tells you about the Firewine Bridge ruins, located somewhere South-East of Beregost. He warns you, however, that the travel and the ruins themselves are quite dangerous.
8- SILKE ROSENA:
She is Garrick’s employer and requires protection. She will only give you the job if you talked with Garrick (6) before. She offers you 300 gp., 400 gp. if you have a good charisma. There are 2 ways of solving this quest:
Good way: Rosena needs you to kill 3 thugs who are supposedly “threatening” her, but it becomes clear through the conversation that this is false. If you refuse to kill them she will attack you and you’ll be forced to defend yourself. She is an average spell caster, so strike quickly. She casts such things as Invisibility and Lightning Bolt. She is worth a good 900 Exp. and she is carrying 400 gp., a Quarterstaff +1 and a Potion of Invulnerability(worth about 600 gp.). The 3 men she was trying to kill will also be grateful and give you a Potion of Defense(worth about 350 gp.). Finally, Garrick will offer to join your party.
Evil way: Kill the 3 thugs Silke wants dead. This will give you 3 Potions of Defense. Afterwards, kill Silke for trying to lie to you for 900 Exp., 400 gp., a Quarterstaff +1 and a Potion of Invulnerability. Note that this tactic sometimes costs you reputation points(I think that during the day you loose reputation for killing the 3 thugs…). Garrick may or may not accept to join you after that(it may be reputation related…).
9- RED SHEAF INN:
1st Floor:
Karlat: A dwarven fighter who wants to collect the bounty on your head. Be careful, however, as this one is more competent than the previous assassins. He has a low AC and can hit you quite hard. The best strategy to get him is to use the spell Entangle. When he gets caught, use missile weapons and magic spells(Magic Missiles, Larloch’s Minor Drain, Chromatic Orb) against him to finish him off.
Perdue: A halfling whose sword has been stolen by a gnoll near High Hedge. Be careful, however, as you can loose the quest easily if you don’t say the right things(choose options: 1-2-1-1). Return him the sword for 50 gp. and 500 Exp.
Bartender:
Rooms: Peasant and Merchant.
Shop: No.
Drinks: Yes.
Steal: No.
2nd Floor:
Raleo Windspear: Gives you a lot of useful information about Beregost. First, he tells you about the Ulcaster School ruins, South-East of Beregost. He then tells you about lady Mirianne (12) who awaits news of her husband who went on a trip to Amn.
Chests: The Red Sheaf is the best inn in town for a bit of burglary. There are quite some gold and gems in the chests and they are easy to open.
10- NOBLEMAN’S HOUSE:
This house is also a good place for a bit of thievery. On the second floor there are 3 chests containing treasures: 1 is unlocked, the second is easy to open and the third is rather hard. You can get a Gold Necklace, a Wand of Lightning, 86 gp, a Potion of Healing, a Potion of Invisibility and a few gems from there.
11- MILL:
This one is just for fun: besides the mill there is a bag containing the only non-magical girdle of the game =).
12- LADY MIRIANNE:
Quest to be on the lookout for any news concerning her husband, Roe, that you might come across. Actually, you can find the news just South of Beregost on an ogrillon who killed the messenger trying to bring her a message. Return her the scroll from her husband for 300 Exp. and a Ring of Protection +1.
13- HOUSE:
This is just a house like another but you can find a Potion of Heroism in a chest on the second floor. The potion is worth a good 400 gp. in any shop!
14- THUNDER HAMMER SMITHY:
Taerom Fuiruim:
Shop: He has a wide selection of magical and non-magical weapons and armor. Here is a list of his magic items: Mace +1, Short Bow +1, Dagger +1, Dart +1, Sling +1, Quarterstaff +1, Long Sword +1, Short Sword +1, Arrows +1, Arrows of Ice, Arrows of Biting, Arrows +2, Bolt +1, Bullet +1, Leather Armor +1, Plate Mail, Small Shield +1, Medium Shield +1, Full Plate Mail, Shadow Armor, Light Crossbow of Speed. Dagger of Venom.
Quest: Taerom can forge an Ankheg Plate Mail (AC1) for you for an Ankheg Shell and 4000 gp. The forging takes about a week. Alternatively, he can buy an Ankheg Shell from you for 500 gp.
Chest: In one of the chests there is a Bastard Sword +1. A well worth piece of burglary. Just send a thief with a good Lockpicking ability during the night. Be sure to have a Potion of Invisibility. Open the chest, take the sword, drink the potion and leave. Go to sleep and the next morning the guards should be gone. Otherwise, they will be gone at your next visit of Beregost.
15- THE JOVIAL JUGGLER:
1st Floor:
Bjornin: A paladin who tries to heal his wounds following a battle with some half-ogres to the South-South-West of Beregost. Asks you to go and give them a lesson. Once this is done, come back to him for a Medium Shield +1, +1 Reputation and 400 Exp.
Old Gurke: An old dwarf whose magic cloak has been stolen from his back by a band of tasloi in the eastern part of Cloakwood forest. Asks you to bring it back to him. When you return, he tells you to keep the cloak because it has made him quite popular in town and you also get 300 Exp.
Bartender:
Rooms: The 4 types of rooms are available.
Shop: No.
Drinks: Yes.
Steal: No.
Officer Vai: Comes to the Jovial Juggler once you have cleaned the Naskhel mines and asks you help to get rid of the bandits in the area. She pays 50 gp. per bandit scalp and can also buy Wyvern heads for 1000 gp. each. Once you have cleaned the Bandits Camp, return to her for +1 Reputation.
2nd Floor:
Oogie Wisham: A commoner who has turned paranoiac because of Bjornin’s presence. He refuses to leave his room and also refuses that you go and settle the problem with Bjornin(because in fact there is NO problem).
16- LANDRIN’S HOUSE:
This is the house Landrin the gnome wants you to clean. There are 4 Huge Spiders inside, worth 270 Exp. each. The fight isn’t hard but you should have some antidotes at hand in case the spiders bite you. After the fight, grab the body of the biggest spider, the Worn Out Boots and the Bottle of Wine and return them to Landrin at the Friendly Arm Inn for a nice reward.
17- ELMINSTER:
Comes to see you once more when you have cleaned the Nashkel mines. This time he tells you his name and you can have a good chat with him about your actions on the Sword Coast so far, even though he stays rather vague in his comments. Also, there is a little girl near him, Chloe, who tells you that Officer Vai wants to speak with you at the Jovial Juggler.
